Road to the future: A421, UK
By thinking differently, we are constructing a road near Bedford in England more sustainably than ever before. We are using alternative materials − some previously unheard of in highway construction and aiming for major CO2 savings. And this road is just the beginning of a long journey: we are sharing the ideas pioneered here across the Group.
"Great teamwork by great people with great
ideas have combined to deliver a sustainable
A421. Our legacy will be a safer road for
sustainable communities."
Phil Clifton, Project Director, Balfour Beatty Left
"The A421 sets a benchmark for the use
of alternative materials on future projects.
The use of tyres and power station ash are a
win-win, environmentally and economically."
Suzanne Bryon, Environmental Adviser, Balfour Beatty Right
